The Science Behind Intel® SFI

The 4th Industrial Revolution has integrated digital technology into every aspect of our lives. Employers today seek workers who come prepared with new ways of thinking and solving problems. While demand for physical, manual, and basic cognitive skills is declining, higher level cognitive skills, social-emotional, and technological skills1 are much in demand. Education leaders are looking to foster these future-ready skills in ways that feel as natural to students as learning math and language skills.

Additionally, the Covid-19 pandemic has dramatically accelerated technology use around the world. Educational systems have pivoted to sustain learning in classroom-, remote-, hybrid-, and blended-learning environments. This has brought into sharp focus the need for built-in, long-term, resilient systems, as chronicled by a recent UNESCO International Bureau of Education Report.2

These moves toward greater access, flexibility, robustness, and equity are a good start, though most of them happened without much foresight, and need technology to be much more robustly integrated into a future-ready education system.

Our framework guides decision makers and educators in adapting technology and creating learning opportunities that actively engage students around the world. We inspire teachers and learners to reach their full potential by encouraging higher order thinking, empowering them to build their skills from anywhere and maximizing outcomes that prepare them for a technology-infused future.

Prof. Derek Bell

Former Chief Executive of the Association for Science Education (ASE) and Head of Education at the Wellcome Trust. He was appointed Professor of Education in The College of Teachers and awarded an honorary Doctorate of Education by Manchester Metropolitan University in 2011.
